A geisha in a blue kimono drifts in a moonlit boat beneath a red paper lantern in this 1888 woodblock.
Description
From Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's celebrated series of women's portraits, this 1888 woodblock shows a geisha of the mid-1870s seated in a boat at night. Her indigo kimono glows beneath a red paper lantern as waves ripple past. A poetic example of Meiji-era ukiyo-e for collectors of Japanese art.
